Thinking About Historical Thinking
Respond to Calder
/ Task 16/20‎

Step 1 of 1

In this activity, reflect on Lendol Calder's "Uncoverage: Toward a Signature Pedagogy for the History Survey" in relation to your previous reading of Sam Wineburg's "Historical Thinking and Other Unnatural Acts" and Stéphane Lévesque's Thinking Historically. Respond to the following questions:

  1. What evidence do you find in Calder's approach to teaching an introductory history survey that he has been influenced by Wineburg's conclusions? Do you see similar congruence with Lévesque's views on historical thinking?
  2. Calder is writing about an introductory history survey course. Draw on his ideas about teaching and apply them to a historical exhibit in a museum or archive. How would you use what he proposes to structure an exhibit?
